The destination is established early on purely to setup the journey, a journey through which you’ll come across a charming roster of colourful characters with interactions reminiscent of Animal Crossing (you’ll know it when you hear it). If you’re in it for the story, then there’s a guaranteed heartfelt tale of personal growth and overcoming your own demons. As we overcome the struggles of the challenges ahead of us, so does she overcome her own challenges and struggles, she deals with in her life. It’s a challenging journey following a lovely heroine. The easiest way to describe Celeste would probably be to call it a very hard platformer with a charming pixel art style, but at heart, it’s so much more. Same goes for the Audio design of the game, I can’t say anything bad about it Celeste ?
The cutscenes and character portraits are drawn and absolutely lovely in my opinion. Graphic and Audio You have to like the art style of Celeste but it mixes really well with the platforming and helps with keeping an overview on the current objective. The game always places you right back before the current challenge, you blink once and you are already on your next try back in the action. But it becomes rarely frustrating, since you never lose any progress. You will die, a lot, and possible a bit more even. While the game is very hard, it’s never unfair.
Celeste plays like you would expect a more classic, tight platformer to play. I don’t want to spoil anything more, since the Story is a key part of Celeste, and is best to discovered by yourself. It’s a journey about emotions, friendship, mental struggles and finding yourself. Why? That is something she doesn’t know herself at first, beside the feeling that she wants to do it. You play as Madeline, set out to climb a mountain. Lightning-fast respawns keep you climbing as you uncover the mysteries of the mountain and brave its many perils.
